This Policy Paper summarises the ETNO position on the Review of the Telecoms Framework.
ETNO welcomes the drive of the European Commission to conduct a review aimed at dealing with the current policy challenges, acknowledging the more complex market structure and increased competition between different technologies and services in telecom markets.
The event, which will take place in Brussels on Tuesday 27 September, will focus on “Reform and progress: the role of telecoms in a digitising world”.
In 2016, Europe started a historic reform of its telecoms and digital laws. Against the backdrop of this reform, there is renewed hope that a redefined communications industry will bring more benefits to consumers, attract investment and promote the development of innovative services. As the provider of state of the art networks, telecom operators are uniquely positioned as the gateway to both new technologies and social change.
But as the world globalises and technologies converge, will Europe be able to compete against other leading markets? Can it nurture much needed, home-grown innovation? And how resilient will the single market prove to be post Brexit?
The FT-ETNO Summit will gather leading policymakers, regulators, industry executives and investors from Europe and beyond to discuss and debate the direction of sector reform proposals, and their impact on the role of telecoms in the rapidly developing communications space.
Imagine billions of people and devices connected to powerful broadband networks. Imagine the opportunities unlocked by the interaction between technological innovation and access to superfast broadband. Imagine the fresh opportunities this means for individuals as well as for organisations. And the positive reverberations on society and economy.
ETNO has been the voice of Europe’s telecommunications network operators since 1992 and has become the principal policy group for European electronic communications network operators. Its 41 members and observers from Europe and beyond are the backbone of Europe’s digital progress. They are the main drivers of broadband and are committed to its continual growth in Europe. ETNO brings together the main investors in innovative and high-quality e-communications platforms and services, representing 60% of total sector investment.
