ETNO meets with US regulators and stakeholders

Washington DC, 21 July 2017 – A delegation from the ETNO Association, representing Europe’s leading telecom operators, visited US regulators and stakeholders this week for a fact-finding mission.

During the 2-day visit, ETNO delegates had the opportunity to learn more about the latest policy and regulatory developments in the United States. In particular, the delegation discussed how policy and regulation on the two sides of the Atlantic can contribute to lower barriers to innovating and investing in the telecom and tech sectors. This is of utmost importance, especially at a time in which telcos are laying the ground for new consumer and business services with 5G and the Internet of Things.

The ETNO Delegation, led by the Executive Chairman Steven Tas and by the Director General Lise Fuhr, included representatives from Telefonica, Deutsche Telekom, Proximus, Telenor and Orange.

On the institutional side, delegates met with the Federal Communication Commission (FCC), the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the Department of State, the United States Trade Representative and the EU mission to the United States.

On the industry side, delegates met with ETNO observer members AT&T and Verizon, as well as with USTelecoms and Comcast.

Steven Tas, Chairman of ETNO, said: ”At a time in which markets and technology move fast, a sustained commitment to the transatlantic dialogue is more and more vital. It is important to avoid regulatory divergence and to promote simple, principle-based and horizontal digital policies on both sides of the Pond”.
