The future of Internet: Lise Fuhr at IGF 2021

How does Internet governance need to change in order to meet the changing nature and role of the Internet? Our Director General Lise Fuhr joined the Internet Governance Forum 2021 talks to discuss the future of the Internet. Lise had three main messages:

🛡️ SECURITY
As the Internet is evolving rapidly with so many more uses, it is crucial for citizens, businesses and governments that it stays secure and resilient. Standards and practices for security should remain cutting edge, in the face of ever more numerous and complex #cyberthreats.

🤝BOTTOM-UP APPROACH
Additionally, the Internet must be based on open standards, developed by the whole Internet community: all actors must be working together. It is only through the multistakeholder model that we will avoid the negotiations behind closed doors by only state actors.

⏭️FUTURE-PROOFED INTERNET
Finally, to anticipate its future needs and to be ready for the challenge of a world of billions of connected devices and people, the Internet has to be future-proofed. The adoption of IPv6 is an important catalyst for emerging services such as IoT, intelligent transport services, and many other technologies.

The IGF 2021 will end tomorrow, 10 December. Follow the sessions at the link below.

Watch the video recording of Tech & Politics Forum by FT-ETNO

 The "Tech & Politics Forum" by FT-ETNO gathered 12 CEOs, 3 European Commissioners and several other stakeholders to discuss today’s role of tech to society’s problems.

In brief, they discussed the following:
🙆‍♂️ today, technology is no longer a sectoral debate, but one in which all want to be involved;
🙋‍♀️ tech discussions intersect with those on democracy, trust, climate change, economic growth, infrastructures;
💁 tech nerds must take a step back and see the broader picture. Non-experts must take a step forward and learn the basics of tech
