Speaking at the EU Smart Energy and Sustainable ICT conference on May 3, Daniel Pataki, ETNO Director, insisted on the key role smart grids have to play to achieve energy efficiency and hence the Digital Agenda goals.

The key steps for fostering the deployment of smart grids are the development of joint EU standards for security and data protection, a clear EU regulatory framework and a strong cooperation between the energy and the telecoms sectors who can both benefit from this win-win opportunity”, said Daniel Pataki.

Telecom and energy sectors are complementary. Telecom operators have a key role to play as an enabler and provider of technology and infrastructure.  ETNO insisted on the importance of network security and protection of data in which the expertise of the telecom providers is essential. A clear European regulatory framework and standards are also key to make economical and secure smart grids a reality.

A change in the regulatory approach is needed to increase incentives for the energy sector to invest in smart grids”, concluded Daniel Pataki.
