LISE FUHR at THE  5G for Smart Communities Support Platform LAUNCH EVENT (25 April)

Our Director General, Lise Fuhr, spoke about the benefits of 5G at the launch of the 5G for Smart Communities Support Platform, which was organized by the European Commission, and highlighted examples of how 5G has empowered and improved communities, such as creating 1,300 jobs in Aveiro, Portugal, and saving lives with 5G-equipped ambulances in Birmingham.

Ms. Fuhr emphasized that achieving the Digital Decade targets on connectivity requires collaboration between the entire digital ecosystem and policy stakeholders, expressing her concerns about reaching the EU’s goal of providing 5G coverage to the entire population by 2030.

#THINKDIGITAL INTERVIEW WITH DAVID GEARY,  General Counsel, Caribbean, Digicel Group

Big tech now dominates Caribbean networks, with 66% of traffic. Building capacity for this costs operators over 300 million annually.

"It is impossible to keep raising prices for consumers. Big tech will not contribute and investors are not willing to invest. Unless big tech contributes, there will be no 5G in the Caribbean. A two-tiered digital world where the developing world is left behind cannot be allowed to happen. Big tech must be part of the solution. And must play and pay their part", he argues.
